Tim Burton's masterpiece starring Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the maniac Clown Prince of Crime the  Joker. This movie also stars Kim Basinger as Vicky Vale and Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent. This movie features the way updated Batmobile.

Anton Furst designed the poster, which he called "evocative but ubiquitous. Only featuring the Bat-Symbol." Earlier designs "had the word 'Batman' spelled in RoboCop or Conan the Barbarian-type".

During production, Jon Peters read in the The Wall Street Journal that comic book fans were unsatisfied with the casting of Michael Keaton. In response, Peters rushed out the first trailer that played in thousands of theaters during Christmas. The trailer was simply a surreal assemblage of scenes without music. It created enormous anticipation for the film.

In months predating Batman's release in June 1989, a popular culture phenomenon rose known as "Batmania". Tim Burton was personally "annoyed by it". Over $750 million worth of merchandise was sold. Cult filmmaker and comic book writer Kevin Smith remembered, "That summer was huge. You couldn't turn around without seeing the Bat-Symbol somewhere. People were cutting it into their heads. It was the summer of the bat and if you were a Batman fan it was pretty hot."

Another popular movie poster from Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie features Michael Keaton as Batman standing next to the then very updated Batmobile. Although the costume appears more truer to the comics interpretation than later Batman movie costumes, the leather look is still a far cry from the cloth look most associated with Batman through the years. Batman having depended in the past mainly on his acrobatic skills and smoke bombs to avoid the bullets of his adversaries.

The Batmobile while a very popular movie car still misses a little bit of the coolness of the TV show, but would still be a neat ride to have in your garage. It reflected the environment of Burton's Art Deco Gotham City. It was huge, long, low and sleek, and was built on a Chevy Impala chassis. Every gadget seen on the Batmobile used in the Batman movie was fully functional, including the jet engine, which consumed fuel at such a high rate that there was only enough fuel capacity to run it for the approximately fifteen seconds of the longest shot in which the viewer can see it operating.

Talk about the Dark Knight Detective Batman.

Super Hero Box Office Battle

23 Aug 2005 at 10:17am

It looks like once the smoke has cleared over the super hero box office war this summer that Batman has indeed beaten the Fantastic Four. Yes, all four of the super heroes were no match for Batman Begins! Batman has made it over the 200 million dollar range which would be a record for the Caped Crusader except for the very first major motion picture focusing on Batman starring Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton still holds the title as the Bat Champion. The Tim Burton movie made a awesome 251 million dollars!

28 Jul 2005 at 7:18am

A Batman special edtion dvd gift set will be arriving in stores October 18 this year. It will feature all four Batman movies from the 1980's and 1990's.
It will also contain 9 music videos from Prince, Seal, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Other bonus features contain director commentaries by Joel Schumacher and Tim Burton, cast and crew interviews, several new documentaries, and "making of" featurettes. Now let me just take this time to complain. I just got the last gift set at Walmart because I could finally afford it. No wonder it was cheaper. It didn't have all these cool extras! Holy disappointment Batman! Oh well. If your looking for Batman dvds with a complete list of released movies and cartoon so far check out this page Batman dvds. You might want to bookmark it too in case your interested in ordering the new Batman dvd special edition gift set.

Superman and Batman Animated DVD Releases

16 Jul 2005 at 1:10pm

Both Superman and Batman animated dvd releases are on their way. Batman's will more than likely come first, and will be pitting Batman vs Dracula. Batman has already had quite a few of straight to video releases from the same creative team as the highly acclaimed Batman the Animated Series. Superman's dvd release will be timed to go along with Superman Returns big theatre release. Duane Capizzi, supervising producer of The Batman television series, is writing both films. Quote from Capizzi, "With Superman, I kind of fell into this project and boy, I've really grown to love him," Capizzi said. "It's a story where Superman is really driven by his passions. And it's sort of the Seven Labors of Hercules, where he literally goes to the ends of the Earth -- and then some -- to rescue somebody very important to him."

Batman Begins Review

16 Jul 2005 at 1:12pm

Here's my review of Batman Begins you may have already read at superherouniverse.com

Batman Begins really delivers from start to finish. It's Batman for grownups, but don't be mistaken because kids will love it to. At least my twelve year old did. I've read another review that said a 8 year old had problems with the scary scenes, but I would venture to guess that most kids would be okay. My whole family loved it. The origin details may not be quite as enjoyable for non comic book fans, but over all it's a good movie no matter if you've never even looked at a Batman comic book.
