Baldwin was born in Massapequa, New York, the son of
Carol Newcomb (née Martineau), a breast cancer survivor who founded the
Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center of the University Hospital and Medical
Center at Stony Brook, and Alexander Rae Baldwin, Jr., a high school
history and social studies teacher and a
football coach.Stephen
Baldwin is the brother of actors, Alec, Daniel and William, sometimes
collectively known as the "Baldwin brothers." Baldwin was raised in a
Roman Catholic family and is of Irish, English and French descent.
During his time at Berner High School, Baldwin was a
successful opera singer.[4] After high school, he attended the American
Academy of Dramatic Arts for one year.[5] He played small roles in shows
like Kate and Allie, "America's Most Wanted" and Family Ties before
landing his first adult feature film role, in the 1988 film The Beast of
War. That role led to other parts, in the 1989 films Last Exit to Brooklyn
and Born on the Fourth of July, as well as the television series The Young
Riders. In 1995 he landed a breakthrough role in The Usual Suspects.
Baldwin's next role was in 1996's Bio-Dome.
In 2000, Baldwin recorded a novelty dance track entitled, "My 18 Inch
Biceps" that quickly became an internet sensation. The song, about none
other than his fan-adored muscular build, became an overnight Top 10 hit
on several online music charts. However, having never been released as an
official single, it failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2002, Baldwin participated in Celebrity Mole Hawaii, the first
celebrity edition of The Mole. ABC broadcast the program in early 2003.
Later that year he returned for Celebrity Mole Yucatan, which ABC aired in
early 2004.
In September 2006, Baldwin released a book titled The Unusual Suspect,
which details highlights from his personal life, career, days of drug
abuse and ultimately his conversion to Christianity. In the same year he,
Mario D'Ortenzio, and Bobby Brewer founded Breakthrough Ministries which
was designed to utilize extreme sports as a ministry via arena tours which
were referred to as AsSalt Tours and featured extreme sports celebrities
with Christian Hosoi being the most notable. Breakthrough Ministries was
disbanded in late 2008 and relaunched under the name Antioch Ministries
with the stated purpose of existing "to facilitate the gifts and calling
of Stephen Baldwin."
In August 2007, Baldwin was back on television when CMT cast him in Ty
Murray's Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge, one of nine celebrities cast.[6]
In the first episode, Baldwin was injured in a bad fall from a wooden
pontoon, breaking his shoulder blade and cracking a rib. Under doctor's
orders, he left the show in the second episode.
From January-March 2008, Baldwin appeared on Donald Trump's Celebrity
Apprentice, Season 7, on NBC. Baldwin end-up being fifth, out of the 13
celebrity contestants.
Baldwin has teamed up with conservative Christian talk-radio host Kevin
McCullough and put together a weekly radio show called,
"Baldwin/McCullough Xtreme Radio," airing on 21 stations across the
country.
Baldwin and Trace Adkins became friends while competing on Celebrity
Apprentice. In October 2008, Baldwin appeared in the Adkins' music video,
"Muddy Water."
On October 18, 2008, Republican vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin
joked with lifelong Democrat Alec Baldwin during a Saturday Night Live
skit that Stephen is her "favorite Baldwin brother."
Baldwin became a born-again Christian shortly after the
September 11 attacks. Since converting, he has sought to evangelize young
people through projects such as The Breakthrough Ministry, which involves
skateboarding and extreme sports, Christian rock concerts, laser light
shows and fireworks.
As a political conservative, he was an outspoken supporter of the McCain-Palin
presidential ticket for 2008, after Mike Huckabee dropped out of the
presidential race. He resides in the village
of Nyack, New York, with his wife, Kennya, and their family. In 2006, he
launched a campaign to prevent an adult bookstore from opening in Nyack.
Physical fitness has always been big with Stephen Baldwin. Such was
the subject of his novelty internet hit from 2000--"My 18 Inch Biceps."
Stephen is an avid hat lover and is said to possess over 1000 hats.
He has a tattoo on his left shoulder of the initials "HM" for Hannah
Montana. His daughters are fans of Hannah Montana, and he got the tattoo
after making a pact with Miley Cyrus that he would be allowed to cameo on
the show if he had the initials tattooed on him. He revealed the tattoo to
Miley at a book signing in Nashville, TN on November 10, 2008. |
