SpongeBob SquarePants is an Emmy-nominated American animated television
series and media franchise. It is currently one of Nickelodeon's and
Nicktoons most watched show. In 2007, it was named by TIME as one of the
greatest television shows of all time. Although its original network is
Nickelodeon, SpongeBob is now broadcast across the world. It was created
by artist, animator, and former marine biologist, Stephen Hillenburg, and
is produced through his production company, United Plankton Pictures, Inc.
The series is set in the Pacific Ocean, in the fictional city of Bikini
Bottom and on the surrounding lagoon floor. The pilot episode first aired
in the United States on Nickelodeon after the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice
Awards on May 1, 1999. The "official" series premiere followed on July 17,
1999 with the second episode, "Bubblestand/Ripped Pants."
The series star is a character who is a sea sponge, but in shape and color
his body more closely resembles a kitchen sponge.
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a 2004 feature film based on
Nickelodeon's hit TV series SpongeBob SquarePants. The film was released
to movie theaters in the United States on Friday, November 19, 2004. It
was produced by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. It was
distributed by Universal Studios and was dedicated in memory of Jules
Engel.
Box-Office
The movie was a box-office success. It opened at #2 behind Disney's
National Treasure, earning $32,018,216 over the weekend on 4,300 screens
at 3,212 theaters and averaging about $9,968 per venue or an average of
$7,446 per screen. The film closed on Thursday March 24, 2005, having been
unsuccessful at outgrossing its holiday animated competitors, The
Incredibles from Disney/Pixar, and The Polar Express from Warner Bros.
Pictures. It still made a huge profit for both distributor Paramount
Pictures and producer Nickelodeon Movies, having earned $85,417,988 in the
United States and $140,161,792 worldwide, while being produced on a modest
$30 million budget. |
