Forbidden Planet is a 1956 science fiction film and a subsequent novelization by W.J. Stuart. The film features a number of Oscar-nominated special effects, groundbreaking use of an all-electronic music score, and the first screen appearance of the famous Robby the Robot. Also notable is its very effective execution and use of well designed sets, flats, props, matte paintings and sound stage scenic paintings. The production was supervised by Dore Schary, the film's uncredited executive producer. The effects come off very well for such an early sci-fi movie. It was years ahead of it's time quality wise.

In the early 2200s, the United Planets Cruiser C-57D is sent to the planet Altair IV in the Altair star system, sixteen light-years from Earth, to find out what happened to the Bellerophon expedition, sent out some twenty years earlier. They discover a Dr. Morbius and his lovely daughter Altaira who ends up taking a shine to the United Planets ship Commander John J. Adams played by Leslie Nielson.  Richard Anderson most popular as Oscar Goldman from the Six Million Dollar Man also stars as Chief Engineer Quinn.

Dr. Morbius shows the commander a lost part of the Forbidden Planet created by an ancient and now extinct race of aliens called the Krell. One interesting note he also shows them Krell technology including a very strong steel called adamantium. This is also the same name Marvel Comics uses for it's fictional universe's steel. In it's most widely known context it is used Wolverine's claws, and Captain America's shield.

The most popular cast member was not even human. Robby the Robot measuring in at 7' 6"  was the film's focus for most of the movie posters for Forbidden Planet, and went on to guest star in many classic TV shows.
